Additions
Building
an addition to your home is one of the most important times to call an
electrician. When adding on to your home, calculations are needed to
size the service of your home to the existing and additional square
footage. This is also a time to take great opportunity in
making modifications to your existing electrical system such as replacing
lighting fixtures, switches and receptacles. You might also want to
add fans or outlets when adding on a screened enclosure.

Solar Installation

As
of 2008, Federal, State and local government agencies in addition to
Utility Companies, have made many
significant changes regarding alternative energy solutions. For
instance, a 30% property tax rebate with no cap. Previously under
law, homeowners were only allowed up to $2000.00. That is no longer
the case. In addition, Solar power efficiency has doubled since the
90's. Friends, we live in Florida where sunshine is plenty. You can now install solar
and save
30% on the installation. You will also cut your light bill by 2/3, if not
completely, in the first year and you will continue to save every year thereafter.
One other thing to mention, as of last year the State of Florida now has Net
Metering. This means you can sell the electricity back to the power
company at the same cost you pay for it.
You could literally farm
electricity if you so desired.

Many homeowners have installed generator systems in the
event of power loss during a storm or hurricane. Solar installations
are currently built and installed to withstand 150mph winds. Most of the time
there is plenty of sunshine after the storm. If you are considering
installing Solar as a backup, in the event of power loss, you should do
further research regarding battery backup with Solar. If you are
currently hooked up for net metering you should consider battery backup for
loss of grid power.
Information regarding the many benefits of Solar must become
known to you, and everyone you know. In Phaze has made
Solar and its benefits one of our primary goals. This subject is discussed with every
customer we come in contact with. We have provided many links to
articles, publications and required forms below, in addition to a link to the
Sunpower products we provide and install.
Please take the time to look around, we guarantee you will be
surprised. Also, please feel free to call or e-mail us with any
questions you might have. We also provide free estimates for
installation.

Lightning Protection

Florida has been dubbed by some as the lightning capitol
of the world. It is by far the lightning capitol of America.
So ask yourself, "when was the last time I noticed a home with lightning
protection?"
In the past, lightning rods/protection were far more
used mostly to protect barns where people kept their prized possessions,
their horses and livestock. You will still likely find lightning
protection on most horse barns across America, especially horses of higher
value. But whatever happened to protecting your home?
Consider the deductible on your homeowners
insurance. Now consider the cost and hassle of losing all, or most
of your electronic equipment in your home due to 1 direct lightning
strike. Here is a list of some items that could be destroyed:
computers, televisions, phones, electronic appliances such as ovens,
stoves, microwaves, dryers and washers. The destruction to a home
after a lightning strike can be devastating. It
may not happen to you, but if it does, it is one experience where we truly
sympathize with the customer.

A
lightning protection system can avoid this potential disaster. It is like building a lightning shield around your home
protecting you from a lightning strike. If an entire
system is a little over budget there are some low cost adjustments you can
make. The first recommendation is to call us out to measure the
resistance-to-ground of your electrical grounding system. We can
install additional ground rods if needed. Most homes over 5 years
old need some type of service to the grounding system. Grounding
systems are generally connected using lugs and clamps. Over time
these connections become loose and can possibly come apart. The
home is then a sitting duck, not to mention the potential damage to electronics or electrocution.
Another
low cost protection device is provided by our power company, OUC or
Progress Energy. This is a surge arrester that attaches directly to
your meter. In Phaze does sell and install similar devices but we
highly recommend installing the devices provided by the utility
company. On average they cost an additional $5.00 per month and come
with a warranty. We also recommend connecting your highly sensitive
electronic equipment such as TV's, computers, printers, faxes, monitors
and phones to an uninterrupted power system (U.P.S) /surge protection strip
that plugs into your receptacle outlet. These can be bought at most
stores that sell any type of electronics.

There
is one other thing to mention with regards to lightning protection and
your home's grounding system: Most homes electrical grounding
systems installed from the early 1900's up until the early 90's were
connected to the homes plumbing system. Most of these homes had
copper plumbing that were sometimes piped under the slab of the
house. Simply put, the low current, combined with water, copper,
and in Florida, the salt content of the soil, make for a very likely
potential of a leaking pipe under the home. We highly recommend taking the grounding conductor off of the
piping system and tying to a newly installed 10' grounded electrode which is
hammered into the ground within 6 feet of your electrical service
equipment.
Grounding is the most essential part of any electrical
system. What goes in must come out. It is vital to ensure that
every home is properly grounded. If you have any further questions
please feel free to call or e-mail.

lighting is relatively inexpensive. We typically install dual lamp
motion sensor lighting on various corners of the home. This allows all

if the motion device is set off. The typical cost of installing 1
motion sensor light is between $200.00 and $300.00. Please remember

Generators

Here
in Florida everyone should have a generator. On average every home
in America suffers at least 24 hours of power failure in a year. In
Florida, a power failure can last for days rather than hours. With
Florida being prone to hurricane damaging winds, power failure is to be
expected. In Phaze Electric can install any type of generator for
your home or business. Generator installs can be surprisingly
inexpensive. We can install service to a portable generator for as
little as $500.00 in some cases. You can purchase a portable 12KW
generator from most home improvement stores for around $500.00 and up. For larger systems, 10KW and up,
the cost of course goes up.

Service Upgrades
If your home's electrical service panel looks like
this, you are in desperate need of an upgrade.

Or, if your service cable looks like this, it might
soon start a fire.
The electrical service in your home is the heart of your
home. There are many
benefits to having your electrical service upgraded. Upgrading your
service will lower your electric bill, ensure
longevity of the equipment, increase the value of your home, and will
also, in some cases, lower your insurance premium.
In the recent years of increased property sales we have
been called to many pre-sale inspections done by the buyer. In most
cases these inspectors continuously made note of outdated electrical
service equipment. We have seen cases where the selling price of the
home was negotiated down $10K.
The average cost for a service upgrade ranges from
$750.00 up to $1500.00 depending on the size of service and the conditions
of installation. A home may have both an interior and/or exterior
panel which can cause the price to fluctuate.
Some have a meter and main disconnect on the outside and what is called an
interior sub-panel on the inside. In Phaze Electric only installs 200 amp
equipment. There is a minimal cost difference between 150 amp and
200 amp equipment and it is best to allow for future additions on the property or the home. It is recommended to replace all of
the equipment, wire, and all breakers.
During the installation of the upgrade it is also
recommended to have your overhead service drop installed
underground. There is no cost from the power company. They
will take down the existing overhead line and install the new one
underground at no cost to you. We also recommend that you contract
the dig or dig the ditch yourself to save money. We would not
suggest paying In Phaze or any other electrical company's hourly rate to
dig a ditch. We have various companies that we can recommend.
Upgrading the electrical service of your home not only
offers the previously mentioned benefits, it also adds neatness to the home.

Lastly, please feel free to give us a call for a
free estimate.

Switch and Plug Replacement
Most
electrical fires are due to faulty switch and receptacle outlets. In
the past 30 years devices have been manufactured with what is called a
quick connect. Quick connect is a means of stabbing the wire into a
hole in the back of the device. Manufacturers still continue
to manufacture these type of devices. There is some mention in the
National Electrical code instructing electricians not to connect devices
in this manner for such places as hospitals and other locations.
Over time, the quick connect loosens inside of the device ultimately
leading to heating of the device and eventually fire or failure. In
Phaze Electric does not terminate devices using quick connect. We
wrap the wire around a screw that over time will not loosen.

Pictures such as the one on the right are also a good
way to start a fire. In Phaze can run an independent circuit to
anywhere in your home and provide a sufficient means to plug in a 20 amp
extension strip cord. You can find strip extension cords that are
rated for 20 amps at most home improvement stores.
Installing new switches and receptacles not only
prevents a potential fire it also adds a sense of cleanliness and neatness
to the interior of your home. In most homes 1500 to 2500 square foot, switches
and plugs can be completely
replaced for around $1000.00 and under.
In Phaze Electric does not suggest attempting to
do any electrical work yourself. However if you do desire to attempt
to do the work yourself here are some helpful links to assist you.
