Like-for-like device replacement generally does not require a permit. Adding a new outlet, extending a circuit, or a whole-house device replacement in some jurisdictions does — we will tell you which applies before we start.
It surfaces at resale, in an insurance claim, and in an inspection you did not schedule.
If a bid is dramatically under ours, ask whether the permit is included. Usually that is the difference.

Can I just replace outlets myself?
People do, and a fair share of our repair calls are fixing the results — reversed polarity, a bootleg ground jumper, a backstab connection that failed. It is cheap work for us to do right.
What is a bootleg ground?
Jumping neutral to ground inside the box so a tester shows "grounded." It passes a cheap tester and it is genuinely dangerous. We find these constantly in Central Florida.
Do two-prong outlets have to be replaced?
Not legally, but they cannot safely serve modern electronics. Where there is no ground, GFCI protection with the correct label is the code-compliant path short of a rewire.
Where does code require GFCI?
Kitchens, bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, exterior, laundry areas and anywhere near a pool or spa. If yours are missing, that is worth fixing.
Is it cheaper to do the whole house at once?
Considerably. One trip, one setup, volume pricing per device. Doing them one at a time as they fail is the expensive way.
Can you add USB or smart outlets?
Yes. Worth noting USB modules age faster than the outlet does — we will tell you where they make sense.
