A panel upgrade is one of the biggest electrical checks a homeowner writes, and it is also one of the most oversold. Some houses genuinely need one. A lot of them need a load calculation, a couple of fixes, and nothing else.
The signs that really do mean "replace it"
You still have a fuse box, or a 60- or 100-amp service with no room to grow
The panel is a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco — both have known breaker problems
Rust inside an exterior panel, or water staining behind the cover
Scorch marks, a warm cover, or a burning smell anywhere near it
If any of those describe your panel, replacement is the honest answer and it is usually a one-day job.
The signs that usually do not
A panel that is simply full is not a panel that is failing. Doubled-up slots, one breaker that trips when the microwave and the kettle run together, or a plan to add an EV charger — those are capacity questions. A load calculation on your actual house answers them, and it is free with our estimate.

Interior swaps sit at the low end. Exterior meter-main combos cost more because the meter can and mast come with them. Permit and inspection included.
The lugs at the top of a panel stay live even with the main breaker off. Only the utility can make them safe. This is the one job we beg people not to try.
